Rajaji Tiger Reserve
Where the Shivalik Wilderness Comes Alive
Safari Season : 15th November to 15th June !
Rajaji Tiger Reserve, located in Uttarakhand, India, is a magnificent wilderness destination renowned for its picturesque landscapes, diverse wildlife, and ecological significance. Originally established as Rajaji National Park on 29 November 1983, it was formed by merging three wildlife sanctuaries – Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla. The park was named after Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, a prominent freedom fighter, India’s last Governor-General, and a recipient of the Bharat Ratna.
In April 2015, an additional 255.63 sq. km of adjoining reserve forest was incorporated into the protected landscape, bringing the total area to approximately 1,075 sq. km and leading to its designation as Rajaji Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Landscape and Ecological Significance
Situated along the Shivalik hills and foothills of the outer Himalayas, Rajaji Tiger Reserve represents a remarkable example of the Shivalik ecosystem. Its elevation ranges from approximately 302 to 1,000 metres, encompassing a diverse landscape of dense forests, seasonal grasslands, wetlands, and riverine habitats.
The reserve features a variety of forest types, ranging from semi-evergreen and deciduous forests to mixed broad-leaved woodlands and Terai grasslands. Towering Sal (Shorea robusta) trees dominate much of the landscape, creating a rich natural habitat for numerous species. Rivers and streams, including the Ganga, Song, Rawasan, and Suswa, further enrich the ecosystem.
Strategically located at the transition between the western and central Himalayas, Rajaji supports exceptional biodiversity and offers remarkable opportunities for wildlife observation. Its forests also serve as a vital natural resource for the neighbouring cities of Dehradun, Haridwar, and Rishikesh, contributing to the region’s ecological balance.
